She Is Still Singing

Jesus, Jesus, Jesus
Sweetest Name I know
Fills my every longing
Keeps me singing as I go.

Lela B Long

Just before her hundredth birthday my friend Florence went to be with Jesus. Florence was a special member of our Wednesday afternoon hymn-sing  in the Alzheimer’s Unit at Allied Services where I visit each week. No matter the day and no matter the song it seemed that Florence always knew the words and always sang along (Loudly!). Some days Florence would be just singing to herself all through each day. Her life echoed with a cheerful melody even in her 99th year.

Of course we all thought we were helping Florence. I brought a little cheer and music. The nurses helped her to have the dignity to live her best. But for anything we gave we each received from her much more. She gave us her smiles in the face of difficulty. She gave us a thankful heart in situations we would have complained about. She gave us her steady faith when her mind and body were fading. She gave us a song and now she is singing as she goes with Him – every longing now fulfilled! Thank you Florence for your life and thank you Lord for letting us share just a tiny part of that century she lived!

My wife and I serve as members of a worship team at a multicultural church. Our members are from Brazil, Nepal and the U.S.. Because of the many languages and cultures in our local body we face unique challenges, such as how many songs will we do in English today? What new songs can we use in either language that are simple enough for the people to sing. The songs, the devotions and insights here are a small portion of some of the ways God is leading us as we push towards the goal. I pray that these will be both a blessing and an encouragement for those of you who may pass by Praise 2 Worship.
